KIMLAI

KIMLAI’S STORY

I’m 18 years old and have 4 siblings : 2 sisters and 2 brothers. I’m the youngest. Growing up I was lucky enough to go to a Chinese school in a nearby village.

My parents sent me there, because one of my cousins worked in a factory with Chinese people and earned a lot of money so they wanted me to learn Chinese and be able to work with her.  I studied there for 4 years but unfortunately my parents no longer had enough money to pay for the school fees, so I left and stayed at home with my family.

I didn’t have anything to do at home, and my parents were worried about me and my future.

Channy is the Project manager at the Banteay Srey Project and we’re also family (our grandmothers are sisters)and she talked to me about the spa and the opportunities I could have as a trainee.  Having free English classes was the real selling point for me.

I’ve been now working here for a couple months, and even though learning English is difficult, especially the pronounciation, I like attending the classes.

My first week here was quite challenging and I almost gave up, but I’m glad I pushed through and stayed. Now I can do manicure, pedicure, hand and foot massages. I particularly enjoy doing pedicure and foot massages. I’ve learned to cook and make smoothies, so I can also help in the kitchen. I hope I’ll be able to do other spa treatments soon, like body massages and scrubs. But improving my English is important to me too, as in the future I’d like to become a tour guide in Kampot.

I really like walking around and exploring my surroundings.

In my free time I enjoy watching movies and playing video games.

Thanks to the Banteay Srey Project, I can stay at the trainee apartment and be independent financially. I hope to be able to send my family some money in the future, but for now I can only support myself and slowly pay back to the bank the loan that I took some time ago.

In addition to learning new skills and earning money, I’m glad I’ve also made new friends.  I’m not very close to my siblings, so it’s like having a new family.
